hand embroidery rose tutorial

Catch the new freebie! It doesn't have a name, I just call it “rose”, maybe you have some suggestions? :)

I initially planned to prepare it for the launch on a new platform instead of Etsy. But then I sort of didn't like the outcome that much to take money for it :D

But still, there was an effort put into making this design, and stitching it, and taking pictures, so it would be a shame to leave in my computer folders. So I decided to post it as a freebie for anyone who likes it to enjoy!

Previously, I mentioned that I would like to take a break from making new designs, but then the news about closing the shop came and I was seeking for alternatives, and this design was born...

I probably hasted it a bit too much hence not satisfied 100%. I guess I will stick to my initial decision of taking a break from designing new stuff until I figure out where I want to develop myself and get more confident in what exactly I want to make. Don't want to rush anything.

That being said, I hope you like this charming little flower which is designed specifically for beginners!

TUTORIAL

Work the stem and the outlines in split back stitch, using 1 strand of thread. The stem is designed to be a little thicker so you might need several rows of split back stitch there. The veins in the leaves can be worked in simple straight stitches.

long and short stitching tutorial

When working the petals, start long and short stitching from the top. Make as many guiding stitches as you need, and if necessary, draw the lines and layers areas directly on the fabric to aid you. With each new layer of long and short stitching, keep direction of your stitches consistent and make sure you don't leave any gaps in between the stitches.

The last two layers are closer to the bottom of the petal, and since the second last layer is quite different from the previous one, try to add several “spikes” to merge them better. The last layer is right at the bottom, it might be difficult to create variety in stitches there so don't worry about that, the colors will still visually merge and you also will be adding french knots on top so any imperfections will be hidden.

adding french knots to embroidery

After you're done with long and short stitching the petals, outline them in split back stitch like the other petals peeking out. Add French knots to the center and to the bottom of the petals. I used 2 strands of thread overall for French knots, but I used 2 wraps around the needle for the center and 1 wrap around the needle for the petals.
